Inaugural ceremony of WBW 2009

was held on the 2nd of August at 10 A.M at the Hall of Fame of the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC), Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. The Honorable Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh SHEIKH HASINA inaugurated the World Breastfeeding Week 2009 as the Chief Guest. Dr. A. F. M. Ruhal Haque, MP, Honorable Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Prof. Dr. Syed Modasser Ali, Health and Social Welfare Advisor to Prime Minister were present as Special Guests. Dr. S. K Roy, Chairperson of Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation chaired the inaugural ceremony.

Major Achievement of Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation (BBF)

  1. Hon’ble Prime Minister’s ordered that BBF will be associated with MOHFW on IYCF activity in 2009.
  2. ‘World Breastfeeding Week-2010’ (WBW) observed as the national event by the Govt. of the Republic of Bangladesh for the first time.
  3. The national policy declaration by the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s twice was made possible by BBF.

Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)

BFHI is an important element of breastfeeding promotion and support and an approach that reached, trained, and energized a critical audience: professional and para-professional groups. In 1991 UNICEF and WHO launched the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative with its Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. A year later eight hospitals were designated baby friendly in Bangladesh.

Training with BBF

One of the major missions of BBF is to increase knowledge and skill through capacity building on IYCF. BBF has wide network of trained doctors and specialists serving in different government and non-government hospitals throughout the country. These dedicated trainers are ready to train new doctors and nurses in their respective districts/divisions on the breastfeeding and IYCF issues. BBF is equipped with all training facilities and training modules.

Breastfeeding Campaign in Bangladesh was initiated in early 1980s by a group of child health professionals who were concerned about the alarming erosion of breastfeeding practices and its effect on the nutritional and health status of children. This has coincided with the UNICEF child health revolutionary concept of growth monitoring, oral dehydration, breastfeeding and universal child immunization. The breastfeeding movement was formalized as Campaign for the Protection and Promotion of Breastfeeding (CPPBF) in 1989 through the formation of a task force comprising health professionals, nutritionists, scientists, UN agencies and NGO’s Later CPPBF became known as the Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation (BBF).
